What is Lufkin Living the Life Magazine?
Lufkin Living the Life magazine is an annual publication dedicated to promoting the city of Lufkin and the greater Angelina County area. Produced by Kevin Smithhart and widely circulated throughout the community, the magazine serves both residents and visitors as a guide to local culture, events, points of interest, and the distinctive character of East Texas.
The magazine is developed in close collaboration with Visit Lufkin, whose team provides a significant portion of the written content and photography each year. Together, the publication balances civic promotion with editorial storytelling, highlighting the people, places, and experiences that define the region while supporting tourism, economic development, and community pride.
The Challenges
Building on the previous year’s edition, the 2026 magazine required refinement and evolution rather than reinvention. The primary challenge was to mature the publication’s visual language while continuing to support a broad readership and a high volume of editorial content. Key challenges included:
Organizing diverse editorial content into a clear, engaging layout that supported long-form reading
Maintaining visual consistency across sections while reducing visual noise
Writing two original articles and editing content from multiple contributors for clarity and consistency
Supporting immersive, photography-driven layouts while balancing advertising and print constraints
Integrating advertisements with distinct, independent design styles while maintaining visual balance across editorial spreads
The Solution
For the 2026 edition, Christina refined the magazine’s editorial framework to emphasize restraint, clarity, and long-term usability. Color blocking and section divider spreads used in the previous year were intentionally reduced, resulting in a cleaner, more mature aesthetic aligned with the publication’s audience.
Section breaks were reimagined by introducing section titles on the opening spread of each section, incorporating typography inspired by the magazine’s logo. A subtle coral accent color, drawn from an existing design reference, was introduced for graphic elements and section titles, providing continuity without overwhelming the layout.
Layouts were planned with photography in mind from the outset, allowing images to bleed across spreads more consistently. A defined typographic system, supported by paragraph and character styles, ensured cohesion while allowing flexibility for varying article lengths.
Services Provided
For the 2026 edition of Lufkin Living the Life, Christina served as lead designer and contributor in the following roles:
Editorial design and layout for all magazine spreads
Creative direction and refinement of the magazine’s visual system
Copywriting for two original articles
Copy editing and proofreading for contributed content
Graphic design for supporting visual elements and in-magazine advertisements, as needed
Together, these services resulted in a cohesive editorial publication in which design and content worked in tandem, supporting readability, visual storytelling, and real-world production requirements.
The Execution
As lead designer, Christina oversaw the magazine from concept through final design and pre-press delivery. Layouts were developed using a consistent typographic system, with imagery selected to support each article’s narrative and layouts adapted to accommodate varying content lengths.
Rather than relying on standalone section divider spreads, the 2026 edition integrated section titles directly into editorial layouts. This approach reduced page count, increased flexibility for advertising placement, and strengthened visual continuity across the magazine.
Collaboration with Visit Lufkin and the publisher remained central throughout the process, ensuring that editorial goals, community messaging, and design decisions were aligned at every stage of production.
The Results
The 2025 edition of Lufkin Living the Life delivered a polished, visually engaging publication that effectively showcased Lufkin and the greater Angelina County area. Clear organization, immersive photography, and consistent visual systems made the magazine approachable for a broad audience, from longtime residents to first-time visitors.
Distributed throughout the community, the magazine continues to serve as both a promotional and informational resource, supporting local tourism efforts and reinforcing community pride.
This project demonstrates Christina’s ability to manage large-scale editorial design, adapt to evolving content needs, and balance visual storytelling with real-world constraints such as advertising integration, flexible article lengths, and print production requirements. As her first experience leading the design of an entire magazine, the project also reflects a strong foundation in editorial systems thinking and collaborative creative leadership.
